Spiti means “The
Middle Land” It’s the land between India and Tibet. The Spiti Valley
lies above 10,000 ft and is an extraordinary place. In the rain shadow of
the mysterious Tibetan Plateau, the area is considered a desert and riding here
is like exploring another planet. The mountainous desert
valley is located in the north eastern part of Himachal Pradesh in the
Himalayas. The valley is one of the least populated regions in India and
gateway to the northern most reaches of the nation. Most people around the
valley follow Buddhist culture. Situated near Tibet, Spiti Valley is surrounded
by the same terrain conditions as Tibet. The valley has great influence of
Tibetan culture and cuisines. In fact, people shouldn’t be surprised to see
Tibetan people in the valley because many have migrated over a period of time.
Spiti Valley is famous for its monasteries such as Dhankar, Key Gompa, Kaza
Gompa, and so on. The valley forms part of the Lahaul and Spiti district with
its sub-divisional headquarters at Kaza. Lahaul and Spiti are cut off from each
other from Kunzum pass which is at an altitude of 15,059 feet and Rohtang pass
at 13,054 feet separates Spiti valley from Kullu valley.. Though Spiti Valley
